Psychologist Services

Psychologists work across many areas of human life. Psychology is the application of scientific principles to help people understand why they act in certain ways. In particular, how thoughts, emotions, physiology and learning interact to prompt our actions and reactions.

Psychology services are provided by both Psychologists and Clinical Psychologists.

All Psychologists including Clinical Psychologists, are required by law to be registered with the Psychology Board of Australia and are regulated by the Australian Health Professionals Registration Authority. (www.psychologyboard.gov.au)

Clinical Psychology

Clinical Psychologists are Psychologists who have completed additional university study, training and supervised clinical practice. Clinical Psychologists are considered experts in understanding, diagnosing and treating mental and emotional health issues which commonly face many people including;

Anxiety worry and panic
Stress and problems adjusting to major life events and changes
Reactions to traumatic events such as PTSD
Depressed mood or bipolar (up and down) mood conditions
Emotional dysregulation and feelings of emotion being out of control
Disorders of self, identity or personality
Sleep disturbances such as insomnia
Addictions or dependence on substances such as alcohol or marijuana

GP Referral - Mental Health Care Plans via Better Access Program

A Mental Health Care Plan is a support plan for people who would like to access mental health services with a Psychologist or Clinical Psychologist. People accessing these services via a Mental Health Care Plan must first consult with their GP and discuss their needs. The doctor will work with you to develop a plan that suits your own individual circumstances. The plan may include;

A referral to an expert such as a Psychologist or Clinical Psychologist
Other types of mental health care that may be available
Additional strategies to improve and maintain your mental health.

A Mental Health Care Plan that has been approved by your GP enables you to have up to 10 consultation sessions with a Psychologist or Clinical Psychologist. Each session is eligible for a Medicare rebate of up to $141.85 for a Clinical Psychologist and $96.65 for a Psychologist.

Appointment Types and Costs

All clinical consult appointments are based on a 50 minute face to face session with a Clinical Psychologist. 10 minutes is set aside to allow the completion of patient notes and other matters such as correspondence with your GP that may need to be attended to at the time of or immediately after the appointment.
